Historian of the Romanian culture
Corresponding member (March 9, 1991) and full member (May 31, 1993) of the Romanian Academy. Vice-president of the
Romanian Academy (since February 13, 1998).

Publishing Activity
- His name is closely linked to publishing the
critical edition of D. Cantemir's works, out of which, so far, six volumes
have been issued
- Important contributions about the activity
of the humanist historian Constantin Cantacuzino (Stolnicul intre contemporani- The High Steward among His Contemporaries, 1971)
- Numerous and deep investigations into the
history of South-East European ideas and cultures, the definition of the
concept of humanism in mediaeval culture, the national cultural patrimony:

- Discovered the post-Byzantine painting of
Arabian expression - the Melkit Art (Les icones melkites, 1969)
- Studied the history of diplomacy (Pagini
din trecutul diplomatiei romanesti - On the Past of Romanian Diplomacy,
1966, in collaboration)
- The history of Transylvania in the work Transylvania
in the History of Romania (in collaboration)
- Translated Frances Bacon's work, The New
Atlantis (1962), surveyed the first edition of Dante's minor works
in Romanian translation (1971), and is the author of the first Romanian
treatise of documentation: Introducere in documentarea stiintifica
- Introduction into Scientific Documentation
- He discovered and published in facsimile the
original Latin text of Dimitrie Cantemir's work Incrementorum et decrementorum
aulae othomanniae (1999)
