Historian of the Romanian culture

Corresponding member (March 9, 1991) and full member (May 31, 1993) of the Romanian Academy. Vice-president of the Romanian Academy (since February 13, 1998).

Studies

  • High school and University studies (Faculty of Law, Faculty of Philosophy, Institute of Theology) in Bucharest
  • PhD in philosophy in 1970, with the thesis "D. Cantemir's Philosophy"

Professional Activity

  • Director of the Secretariat of the International Association of South-East European Studies (1963-1968)
  • Scientific Director of the Association of International Law and International Relations (1965-1968)
  • Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law in Bucharest (1963-1966) and at "Nicolae Grigorescu" Institute of Fine Arts (1979-1981)
  • Professor at the Faculty of History (1990-1991) and at the Faculty of Theology (1993-1996) at the University of Bucharest
  • Visiting professor at Institut Universitaire de Hautes Etudes Internationales and at Institut Universitaire d'Etudes Européennes in Geneva, University of Beirut, University of Strasbourg, and at the University "La Sapienza" of Rome

Publishing Activity

  • His name is closely linked to publishing the critical edition of D. Cantemir's works, out of which, so far, six volumes have been issued
  • Important contributions about the activity of the humanist historian Constantin Cantacuzino (Stolnicul intre contemporani- The High Steward among His Contemporaries, 1971)
  • Numerous and deep investigations into the history of South-East European ideas and cultures, the definition of the concept of humanism in mediaeval culture, the national cultural patrimony:
  • Repertoriul general al bunurilor culturale externe ale poporului roman (General Index of the External Cultural Assets of the Romanian People - 3 volumes, 1962)
  • Les intellectuels du Sud Est européen au XVIIe siecle (1970)
  • Scurta istorie a romanilor - Short History of the Romanians (1977, also translated into several foreign languages)
  • Ratiunea dominanta. Contributii la istoria umanismului romanesc - Dominant Reason. Contributions to the History of Romanian Humanism (1979)
  • Mont Athos. Presences roumaines (1979)
  • Marturii romanesti peste hotare. Mica enciclopedie de izvoare privind istoria si cultura poporului roman - Small Encyclopaedia of Sources on Romanian People's History and Culture (1991- 1998) etc
  • He identified, in Arabian version, the first chronicle written in Romanian (Letopisetul Tarii Romanesti, 1291-1664 in versiunea araba a lui Macarie Zaim - The Chronicle of Wallachia, 1291-1664 in the Arabian Version of Macarie Zaim, 1971)
  • Discovered the post-Byzantine painting of Arabian expression - the Melkit Art (Les icones melkites, 1969)
  • Studied the history of diplomacy (Pagini din trecutul diplomatiei romanesti - On the Past of Romanian Diplomacy, 1966, in collaboration)
  • The history of Transylvania in the work Transylvania in the History of Romania (in collaboration)
  • Translated Frances Bacon's work, The New Atlantis (1962), surveyed the first edition of Dante's minor works in Romanian translation (1971), and is the author of the first Romanian treatise of documentation: Introducere in documentarea stiintifica - Introduction into Scientific Documentation
  • He discovered and published in facsimile the original Latin text of Dimitrie Cantemir's work Incrementorum et decrementorum aulae othomanniae (1999)
