for Judicial Affairs and Treaties. Passed through all diplomatic grades,
from attaché to ambassador
(1992). Attaché in MFA (1966); Third Secretary, Directorate for
International Organizations; Second Secretary (1970) at Permanent Mission of
Romania to UNO and Other International Organizations, Geneva (1978); First Secretary (1979);
Diplomatic Counsellor (1990)
- 1990-1992 - Undersecretary of State, then Secretary of State in the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- November 1992-December 1996 - State Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs
- October 1996 - member of PDSR and head of the National Committee for supporting Ion Iliescu's
Candidature to the Presidency of Romania
- since 1996 - PDSR Senator for Prahova County, head of the Commission on Foreign Policy
- January 1997 - elected Vice President of PDSR and appointed Spokesman of the Party
- July 1997 - resigns from PDSR and founds a new party - Alliance for Romania
(ApR), of social-democratic orientation
- December 1997 - elected President of APR
- November 2000 - runs for President of Romania, but fails
- 2001 - After APR merges with PNL, becomes First Vice-President of PNL
