  • 1967 - Graduate, with exceptional results, of the Faculty of History - University of Bucharest. For political reasons (his father having been a political prisoner, a lawyer, deceased in 1986) he was barred access to higher education immediately after graduating school
  • 1977 - Ph.D. in economic doctrines
  • After 1990 - Refresher studies in European Integration (Salonic and Munchen)

Professional activity

  • 1967-1969 - Historian, "Village Museum", Bucharest
  • 1969-1972 - Scientific researcher, "Nicolae Iorga" Institute of History, Romanian Academy
  • 1972 - Assistant lecturer, Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest. Not being a Communist Party member, he is barred promotion in a higher Education hierarchy

After 1989

  • 1990 - Member of the Christian-Democratic National Peasant Party (CDNPP), Head of the Economic Department of CDNPP. Spokesman for CDNPP. Member of the Board of Executives of the CDNPP, Vice-president
  • Secretary General of CDNPP and President of the CDNPP Parliamentary Group in the Romanian Senate (until February 1998)
  • 1992-1994 Director, "Dreptatea", daily
  • 1993-1998 - Vice-president of the Romanian Senate (in two consecutive legislation); Head of the Romanian Delegation to the "Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe"

  • Founding member of "the Central European Forum" together with Bronislaw Geremek, Raymond Bare and Helmuth Schmidt
